Among the statues which dotted the steppes of southern Russia are some which were once thought to be Hun, though they are now known to be Pechenegs or Kipchaqs, probably from the 12th century. This example comes from Kerch in the Crimea, an area under Byzantine influence which would explain the pseudo-Roman elements in the armour. (State Historical Mus., Moscow)
