A Nishapur figural buffware pottery Bowl depicting a Warrior, Persia, 10th Century with sloping sides and upright rim, decorated in black, tomato-red and mustard-yellow, depicting a male figure with legs and arms astride, holding a shield and a sword, reserved on a ground with floriated kufic inscriptions and stylised rosettes, the rim with a band of hemispherical motif, the exterior of the rim with a chevron band.

     The depiction of a warrior on this bowl provides a contemporary source for military dress of the period. The warrior appears to be wearing a studded shirt and a helmet with two points. For an example of a warrior from Eastern Persia or Transoxiana of the same period, but in the slipware technique, see Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 10th April 2008, lot 168.
