A Large Nishapur Bowl depicting five figures, East Persia, 10th century

Earthenware bowl painted in black, yellow, red and green under a transparent glaze, the centre with a medallion enclosing stylised leaves surrounded by a band of scrolling split-palmettes, the yellow ground of the cavetto painted with five figures, three sitting and two standing, the interstices filled with birds and animals, floral and vegetal motifs, and Kufic lettering.

The inscription in Kufic is undeciphered.
