A Sasanian Silver-gilt Plate, circa 5th Century A.D.
of shallow rounded form with low ring foot, a fine chased line below the rim on the exterior, the interior carved in shallow relief and partially overlaid in high relief with a royal hunting scene, the king riding his steed at full gallop, turning backward, and preparing to unleash his arrow at a pursuing lion, an arrow lodged in his quarry's breast, another lion, probably wounded, sprawled below on a range of hills or mountains, the king wearing a long-sleeved tunic, beaded chest halter with central boss, and crown, windblown sashes on his bow, a sheathed sword at his side, his steed with cropped mane except for three pairs of long locks, forelock, bound tail, and quilted saddle blanket.
