Detail of miniature from the Compendium of Chronicles by Rashid al-Din. Shows Mahmud ibn Sebuktegin, ruler of the Ghaznavid Dynasty of Eastern Afghanistan from 998-1030CE, crossing the Ganges. He can be seen on horseback to the left of the scene and is followed by three attendants, also on horseback. Two are holding spears, while the other is carrying a standard.
