Detail of Portrait of Shah Abbas I, attributed to Bishn Dás

Portrait of Shah Abbas I Attributed to Bishn Dás
(Probably by Bishan Das when with the Mughal Embassy to Persia from 1613-19.)

In 1613 Jahangir, the Mughal emperor, dispatched his ambassador, Khan 'Alam, and a large retinue to the Iranian court of Shah 'Abbas I. One of Jahangir's court artists, Bishn Das, the painter of this portrait, recorded the meeting of the shah and Khan 'Alam, as did the Persian artist, Riza. Many versions are extant showing the meeting of the participants separately.
