Although early Mongol armies were exclusively cavalry they gradually came to include a large percentage of infantry recruited from the subject populations of conquered territories, principally Chinese but also Turks, Khwarizmians, Russians and others.
Main weapons appear to have been a long thrusting spear (principally as a defence against horsemen), javelins, bow or crossbow, and a shield could be carried. Others were engineers. This particular figure, from the Mongol Invasion Scroll of 1293, is probably a Chinese auxiliary. He wears helmet and quilted body-armour, probably of felt.
