Fatimid Dancer on an Ivory Panel, Egypt, 11th-12th century

Openwork ivory with incised decoration and traces of paint.
Watched closely by a spectator who holds a cup, a dancer performs a dance in which the movements are accentuated by the veils he holds in his hands. This type of dance is still performed throughout the Mediterranean world to this day.
