120. (= 85b) PLATTE EINES KASTENS. TAFEL LXVII Jäger. XII. Jahrhundert. Lyon, Schatz der Kathedrale. Die Platte ist zur Dekoration eines Kastens verwandt worden, zu dem sie ihrem Stile nach nicht gehört. Sie zeigt starke Abreibungen. Dargestellt ist ein Jäger zwischen Bäumen mit gefällter Lanze aus einem Jagdfriese, wie ihn das Berliner Horn zeigt (Volbach, Kat. Nr. 586 [Tafel 36]). Mißverstanden ist die über das linke Bein zu weit herabfallende Tunika, ferner die Kopfbedeckung und der Schild im Hintergrunde, der zwar zur Figur gedacht ist, doch von ihr nicht gehalten werden kann. Ein Schild derselben Form, in ähnlich dekorativer Weise ist hinter dem Reiter der Platte Nr. 119 ausgebreitet. Mit dem oben zitierten Berliner Horn besteht eine Stilverwandtschaft in der flüchtigen kerbschnittartigen Gewandbehandlung und den am Rande sich hochziehenden Bäumen. |
120. (= 85b) PLAQUE OF A CASKET. TABLE LXVII Hunter. 12th Century. Lyon, Cathedral Treasury. The plaque was used to decorate a box to which its style does not belong. It shows strong abrasions. A hunter is depicted between trees with a spear atilt from a hunting frieze, as shown by the Berlin Horn (Volbach, cat. No. 586). The tunic that falls too far over the left leg is misunderstood, as is the headgear and the shield in the background, which, although intended for the figure, cannot be held by him. A shield of the same shape, in a similarly decorative manner, is laid out behind the rider of plate No. 119. There is a style affinity with the Berlin Horn cited above in the fleeting notch-like treatment of the garment and the trees that rise up on the edge. |
