Detail of a Mysorean Rocketman in
‘‘The Reception of the Mysorean Hostage Princes by Marquis Cornwallis’
by Robert Home
National Army Museum in Chelsea, London
Tipu’s rocketman. Observe the firing end of the rocket at his side.
It was during the Mysore wars that the western world was introduced to rockets in warfare.
Tipu had several ‘cushoons’ or regiments of rocket-men in his army and British accounts write of the confusion and destruction rained down upon them by these rocket regiments.
Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington) lost prestige when his force was defeated in an encounter with Tipu’s rocket men during the closing days of the 4th Mysore war at Malavelly near Seringapatam.
