Plate ninety-one from the fourth volume of James Forbes' "Oriental Memoirs". In January 1784, Forbes (1749-1819) set sail for England through Goa, Malabar and St. Helena. Before landing at Tellicherry, the ship touched Onore, which was just 22 miles from Musiris (or Cranganore) where Vasco da Gama had landed in this part of the world. Onore was in the possession of the English when Forbes arrived there. The fortress had been taken from the Mysore ruler, Tipu Sultan. It was Forbes' friend, Captain Torriano who had defended the fort then from Tipu's army. This engraving was made from a drawing taken on the spot by an officer after the siege by Tippoo Sultan's forces in 1783, when it was most gallantly defended by Major Torriano and a small garrison.
