Von den drei Platten der Rückseite (b) stellt die linke einen Feldherrn dar in Rüstung und Mäntelchen. Die Rechte ist auf den Schildrand gelegt und umfaßt zugleich den Speer, die Linke ist in gebieterischer Geste ausgestreckt, ganz in der Art eines befehlenden Josua, der seine Krieger in den Kampf schickt gegen die Gabaoniter (II Rotulo, Taf. X). Um aber dem aus dem Zusammenhang gelösten jetzt unverständlichen Gestus einen neuen Sinn zu geben, hat der Schnitzer zu Füßen des Feldherrn einen anspringenden Löwen hinzugefügt. Die Mittelplatte enthält ebenfalls einen solchen Feldherrn, der sich auf seine Lanze stützt und in der Linken ein Schwert hält. Wahrscheinlich handelt es sich auch hier um einen Josua, obgleich in dem lückenhaften Vatikanischen Rotulus ein solcher sich nicht nachweisen läßt. ... |

Of the three panels on the back (b), the one on the left shows a general in armor and cloak. The right hand is placed on the edge of the shield and at the same time embraces the spear, the left hand is stretched out in a commanding gesture, in the manner of a commanding Joshua who sends his warriors into battle against the Gibeonites (II Rotulo, plate X). In order to give the now incomprehensible gesture a new meaning, the carver added a leaping lion at the general's feet. The middle plate also contains such a general, who leans on his lance and holds a sword in his left hand. Probably this is also a Joshua, although in the incomplete Vatican Rotulus no such can be proven. ... |
