8th Century AD: Part of a medallion with two horsemen. Silk. Sant'Ambrogio, Milan. Used to cover the inner faces of doors of the gold altar (835) of Sant'Ambrogio. The rider has been identified with the Sassanian King Bahram V Gor [Gur] (420 - 438 AD), who was given the cognomen Gor (wild ass) as a result of this legendary feat.
