With all the pomp and circumstance associated with such occasions, Sadullah Khan, prime minister during the reign of Shah Jahan (1628-1657),
is shown in this illustration, ca. 1655, presiding over a formal ceremonial gathering, possibly involving either foreign visitors or internal ministers
with whom he is discussing affairs of state. Shah Jahan's rule was characterized by religious tolerance and relative political stability.
