Janissary de la garde du Grand Visir au camp
Painting (watercolour). Folio 56 from an album showing Turkish costume. Yeniçeri, who guards the Grand Vizier in the encampment. His green kaftan is tucked into the belt in front, wide dark blue knee breeches, white stockings and high red boots. A cloak over his right shoulder which is tied by a cord, is possibly a leopard skin (white with black spots). He has two pistols and his janissary head-dress (kece) is white with a green brim and has a gold (empty) plume-holder. He is holding a spear.
The Sixty Harbecis were another special janissary contingent, also assigned to executions. On campaign, forty of them guarded the tent of the Grand Vezir, and twenty guarded that of the Janissary Ağa. They took their name from the long halberd (harbe) that they carried; their tiger skin mantles made them a favorite of artists.
