58. CAROLINGIAN SHIELD PATTERNS
58a and b show typical designs. The radial lines probably represent strengtheners attached to the framework shown in figure 55. The number of radials varied, 5 or 6 being most common, 3 least common. 58c is interesting in being painted with variegated dark and light panels Viking-fashion, Frankish mss. more usually showing shields painted in a single basic colour or left plain, with just rivets and radials for decoration.
Similar shield patterns to these are also to be found in Saxon sources.
