10TH CENTURY CAROLINGIAN CAVALRYMAN
An extract from Armies of the Dark Ages 600-1066 by Ian Heath
57. 10TH CENTURY CAROLINGIAN CAVALRYMAN
Although he is described as Carolingian, France had alternated between Carolingian and Capetian dynasties since the late-9th century, and this figure and 50 are both from a ms. that is in fact Capetian. The last Carolingian king, Louis V, died in 987.
The same source and others also show cavalry in shorter hip-length corselets or equipped like 54 with or without helmets. Written sources and a few illustrations indicate that yet others were identical to 59.
